Pest Library: Wasps & Hornets

(Click on an image to enlarge)

Wasps are stinging insects which are about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. They have various markings, depending on the species, including yellow, red brown, orange and black. These wasps have four clear- or smoke-brown colored wings.

Paper wasps build an open nest from chewed wood, resembling honeycomb-like cells in which they will lays eggs. You can find these nests under decks, overhangs, inside sheds and attics, among many other places. Moving too close to these nests will alarm the wasps and cause them to defend the nest using strong stingers.
