Odorous house ants are about 1/8 of an inch in length and are black to brown in color. The best way to identify these ants is by the rancid-buttery odor detected after one has been crushed. Odorous house ants often nest outdoors under rocks and other such objects, but can also nest indoors in voids near heat. They will eat a wide range of food sources, but prefer sweets. Each nest will contain several egg-laying females. Each female will lay one egg per day, which will hatch in approximately 11 to 26 days.
